Frequently Asked Questions
Everything parents want to know about pediatric dentistry and orthodontics.
Pediatric dentists complete 2–3 years of specialized training beyond dental school, focused on treating infants, children, and adolescents. They understand the behavioral and developmental needs of young patients and create experiences that build lifelong positive associations with dental care.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits help establish a dental home and catch potential issues before they develop.
Common concerns include baby bottle tooth decay in infants, cavities in children, gum inflammation (affecting about 40% of children ages 2–3), thumb-sucking habits, and orthodontic alignment issues in pre-teens and teens.
Primary teeth are essential for proper chewing, speech development, and self-confidence. They also maintain space for permanent teeth and guide jaw development. Losing a baby tooth too early can cause permanent teeth to come in crooked.
Keep it simple and positive — treat it like any new experience, similar to a first haircut. Avoid sharing any dental anxieties. We'll send an activity book before the appointment to help your child feel excited and comfortable.
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings bonded to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, significantly reducing the risk of decay. Combined with regular cleanings and fluoride treatments, sealants are one of the most effective tools in preventive pediatric dentistry.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial evaluation by age 7. Early assessment allows us to monitor growth, identify potential issues, and determine the ideal time to begin treatment if needed.
